Lapras, part of my Pokemon Zoology Collection.
Story:
The icy blue ocean stretched out ahead of us as we sailed past crystalline icebergs. The air was frigid, biting at my cheeks but the sun beat down on us providing some relief from the cold. I was far northeast of Kanto on a research vessel that studied the migratory patterns of Lapras.
We had been travelling for weeks now and that morning I had been told that we were finally getting close to where the Lapras had been seen the year prior. Using sophisticated deep sea microphones they listen for distant calls of the Lapras under the water. Their songs can travel thousands of miles and allow the scientists to pinpoint exactly where they are.
Like our microphones, Lapras have a complex system of tubes within the spirals on their head that channel sound to their advanced inner ear system. This allows them to pick up on and isolate very specific frequencies in the deep ocean that help them hunt, avoid danger and communicate over great distances.
It wasn’t long before they picked up a signal. As the ship turned around a large iceberg I heard one of the crew on deck call out. We all rushed to the edge and watched as a Lapras breached the surface, jumping high and crashing down into the water. One after the other, more Lapras erupted from the surf and their songs could be heard in the air, they were playing!
We dropped our engine too low propulsion and got a bit closer. The crew had formulated an artificial call that they could play that signalled to the pod that we were friendly so it wasn’t long before they were swimming around us. The adults were huge, but so gentle as they swam up to the edge of the vessel.
We watched them for a few hours until the matriarch, an alpha female they had named ‘Big Blue’ let out a long and moanful call, signalling to the others that it was once again time to go hunting. Within seconds, they sank down into the inky black and it was time to review our findings…
