Eventually we saw light! The air grew colder and the sounds of whistling wind filled the air. As we got closer we saw frost gathered on the walls and snow spilled into the cave exit.
Turning off our headlamps we stepped out into a crystal white wonderland. Mountains stretched out in front of us, covered in snow, biting cold air whipped, picking up fresh powder as it danced across the icy surface.
Transfixed by the view I barely noticed the large pillar that stood in front of us.
“What is this?” Maisie said, looking up at an enormous stone carving.
The pillar seemed to be in the shape of a heavily stylised bird with its wings wrapped around its body like it was sleeping. It resembled the bird in the back of the journal, the Articuno.
Further up the mountain we spotted another and another.
“I think they’re like a guide to the temple so you don’t get lost” Maisie exclaimed.
So, we followed them up the mountain side, wading through the thick snow.
We walked for around 2 hours passing a number of the statues, our faces stung from the cold and our legs ached. It was at this point we realised that it was beginning to get dark, the journey had taken longer than we had imagined and we were going to lose the light. Maisie suggested we set up camp and put up our tents near some large rocks that might provide some shelter from the wind. Thankfully we had gear that could construct our tent with ease and we settled in for the night…
